IntroductionThe saviour of the Malayan Tiger Panthera tigris jacksoni in its original habitat
Sahabat Raja Rimba (Friends of the Malayan Tiger or "king of the forest") is the Malaysian Nature Society's community action group based in the heart of tiger territory, within Peninsular Malaysia's fragmented Central Forest Spine. Its outreach is aimed at education and awareness, volunteerism and economic sustainability. The MNS-Man & Nature project, "Contribution to the preservation of the Malayan Tiger", is funded by Maisons du Monde Foundation. |
Sahabat Raja Rimba and The Central Forest Spine
The Central Forest Spine (CFS) is the green backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, once an uninterrupted expanse of jungle and home to the country's megafauna, such as the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, Malayan tapir and Sumatran rhino.
Over the years, development and human habitation have chipped away at this expanse, causing loss of forest cover and ecological services and created forest complexes that are isolated from each other. |
The CFS Master Plan seeks to reconnect these complexes in a series of linkages, aimed at conservation of environment and biodiversity; protection and management of water catchment; nature-based tourism and recreational potential; integrated management of interstate forest; and enhancement of international prestige.
The Sahabat Raja Rimba community action group is based in Link 1 (Sungai Yu Forest Reserve - Tanum Forest Reserve - Taman Negara), which reconnects the two main ranges of the CFS and home to the Malayan tiger . The group's activities include work in the Sungai Yu Eco-viaduct, running under the four-lane CFS highway and meant to provide a safe crossing for wildlife. |
Our tigers are disappearing. Let's work to change that.
